Ariel

For Alafia River State Park: We loved this park! We visited in mid November. Campground was fully booked and we had to move sites while we stayed. What sucks is the sites are all booked but many remained empty- people no showing and not cancelling. The spots were very nice, not super closed to one another and almost all of them had trees and some type of privacy. The bathrooms and showers were clean but I didn’t use them. 50amp hookups and water hookups. Dump site in middle of campground. We loved the mountain biking trails. Helmets are required, but if you forget yours, you can “borrow” one from the ranger office at the entrance for free. There were so many armadillos, squirrels, birds and deer. Mosquitos, yes, but we came prepared with bug spray! At night the nature noise was so beautiful, sounded like we were in a jungle! Overall, we wish we could’ve stayed longer!

For Alafia River State Park: Lovely, quiet state park isolated and off the beaten path. Water & 50 amp hook ups with a dump station on site. Paved sites (although the back of our site #19 was muddy from the nearby swampy ground. Nice shade on some sites. Nice lake, but not really accessible except to look at .... too many snakes and alligators. Zero AT&T and Verizon coverage, no WiFi at all. Did not use the bike trails, there were also horses here at other campgrounds. Seems like a nice park but the lack of connectivity prevented us from staying very long.

For Alafia River State Park: We arrived just before sunset and the person at the gate was extremely helpful and friendly. We pulled into our spot. Now, I had booked the last available site online and noticed that half of the sites were empty still. Odd. Anyway, I plug in and notice the breaker isn't working properly so we go back to the front gate and she said she'd send somebody out to inspect. About 5 minutes later somebody shows up and repairs the circuit breaker.

I try to set up camp, but it's a few minutes after sundown now and the mosquitoes prevent me from pulling my awning down and setting up the way I like to.

Next day I hit up the bike trails. The trails are awesome. Totally makes up for the mediocre camp site. I'd only go back to take the bike out again. If it weren't for the trails I'd definitely say I wouldn't be back.

For Alafia River State Park: Bike paths galore. There were so many paths we could not get to them all. Warning though. The main state web site does not say you need helmets for the bike paths, but there are signs all over the place saying you do when you enter the bike area. We did not have helmets so we took it easy. Next time we will bring helmets though. Not much wild life because of all the bike activity. Camp sites were good and quiet after a long day riding. Will go back again.
