For Rest Picnic Area: Oct 2019: Hog Canyon Rest Area/Picnic Area is on the southbound side of the highway. There is also a dedicated left turn lane in the highway median for northbound traffic into the rest area. The paved parking lot is very small, about 6 auto spaces, for vehicles up to about 22 feet long. There is one designated "Handicapped" auto-sized parking space. There is a short parking lane parallel to the highway that will fit 2 or 3 longer vehicles (maybe 2 commercial truck/trailer rigs). The “restrooms†are a small structure with two vault toilets. There is no running water in the toilet structure or anywhere else in the rest area. Two new-looking, sturdily built, very clean and well maintained roofed patio shelters, each with several picnic tables and benches, are on the west side of a creek from the parking area. Each shelter also has a few raised barbecue grills. The shelters are reached via a small cable suspension bridge over the creek, which appears ADA compliant/wheelchair accessible. Next to the shelters is a historic marker and a signed trailhead leading to Hog Spring, to the west in a canyon about 1.2 miles on a narrow trail. The trail initially fords a narrow stream or marsh (depending on the recent weather) and is only marginally developed or improved. There is no artificial or irrigated landscaping of any kind in the rest/picnic area. The entire setting is part of the natural surroundings. The area is not signed as to any parking restrictions or time limits. It appears on highway maps as a "rest area" symbol but on site appears to be built to be a trailhead parking lot with picnic shelters for recreational users, not so much for highway travelers. We were there in mid-afternoon for 1.5 hours, and use was light during that time. There was one pickup/camper that appeared to have been staying long-term, with no signs of traveling on.
