For Fort Sam Houston Army RV: This place badly needs signs directing you to the Famcamp or anywhere else for that matter. We followed the sentry’s directions and they weren’t close. We ended up going down a troop sidewalk with a Class C and toad. We’re it not for another RV’er seeing us and leading us we’d still be going in circles. The park and staff are great. Propane on site. Trees, picnic table and BBQ grills at sites. We’d stay again. If we could find it. Maps and gate info not accurate . Took us 50 minutes to find our way off base due to closed gates.

For Fort Sam Houston Army RV: Have a strong drink prepared for your arrival, you’ll need it after trying to find the camp! Do not use the Binz Engleman Gate, cement barricaded serpentine traffic pattern will not allow longer vehicles. There are no signs directing you to the camp, the BX, anyplace actually. Pull thru sites are adequate, bathhouses need some updating (private showers with “gang” open changing area). Ok for a night. Might check out Lackland AFB next time in town.

For Fort Sam Houston Army RV: We had a pretty nice stay here in spite of some terrible circumstances. The winter weather slammed us and we were frozen solid quick. The base was closed for 3 days. In spite of all of that it was a nice stay. I think this probably used to be a premier stop. It was clean and kept up but there are some real drawbacks. The laundry facilities need to be replaced. We had trouble with the washing machines every time we used them. I would strongly recommend taking your laundry off post. The bathrooms were clean but also pretty run down. The roads on post are pretty bad and signage on post is terrible. Nice area we had a good time, lots of opportunities to improve. The staff was nice but no very proactive. We would stay again.

For Fort Sam Houston Army RV: I retired out of this post. The campsite is great and the management is very friendly. Propane is charged by the pound and not buy the canister which saves you money. Bring quarters for the washing machine or go to any car wash rack and get them! I’m on my third time camping there. If it’s full you can always go to Canyon Lake

Jeff

For Fort Sam Houston Army RV: Overall an excellent facility and one I would definitely stay at again. Sites are much larger than the normal, plenty of space. Level concrete pads, patio and a picnic table. Utilities are great and conveniently placed. Two well maintained laundry facilities. (Bring quarters, oddly there is no change available at the office) The park is fairly quiet, except for the trains. There are frequent trains but after a few days you don’t notice. Great dog park and many other options for walking near the facility. The rules concerning length of stay apparently have exceptions, a few units appear to be long term but there is significant transient traffic and always seemed to be a couple of open sites. The office does not seem to operate with the efficiency I’d expect for a facility of this size. You are asked to call for current driving directions prior to arrival, I wondered why until I started driving around the base. There are multiple gates. Some appear to be closed permanently, others have hours of operation that seem to change without notice. A listing of the gates, hours of operation and a basic map of the facility would be great info to be supplied on checkin. Turn your GPS off. The shortest route to anywhere seems to use a gate that is seldom open and roads that have been closed for years.

Heather

For Fort Sam Houston Army RV: Giving this park a 3 instead of 4 or 5 because when I called to make a reservation the lady told me we could stay the 2 nights I requested but she would have to move things around. Once we arrived our first challenge was finding an open gate and the actual park once on base. The guards didn’t have the best directions. At the camp itself we found our name on the list and we set up. The next morning I fully expected to have to move based on conversation with the lady. But the camp host had no idea and if a cancellation had not called while I was there I would have probably had to leave. I don’t think their tracking system is the best based on the number of empty spots I saw. The park itself was really nice. Easy pull ins. Hook ups were easy accessible. The park for the kids being open was a plus. I would stay here again. Just need to make sure reservations made way ahead of time.

For Fort Sam Houston Army RV: Very good park. Huge sites. All the base amenities onboard Fort Sam Houston. Highly recommend this camp. Can be hard to find unless one uses the gate by the National cemetery on Harry Wurzbach road.
