For Chippokes Plantation State Park: All sites are now site specific. This is a great change because in A loop it will matter. We have a travel trailer that is 26' tip to tip and in site A22 we were barely able to level front to back. If you can get a site in B loop you are pretty much good to go. Those have 50 amp hookups, paved pads that are really level, and some pull through spaces that are really long. A loop is problematic for longer rigs. The sites on the interior of the loop tend to be decently level from side to side but very sloped. Our trailer was 4" off the ground at the back and 3' up in the front. The outer sites on A loop tend to be relatively flat and much larger. We went on a weekend in July when all the sites were full so we were just happy to get a space. Check in was really easy. We had reserved online and arrived after 6PM so our check in paperwork was waiting for us at the gate in an envelope. Dogs are allowed on a leash, it's recommended you bring rabies vaccination certificates just in case but they don't require proof at check in. There is one dump station and it is located on the way out. The orientation of the dump station makes dumping on the way in a bit of a difficult turn. We managed it with our trailer and a long bed F250 but if our trailer was any longer we wouldn't have been able to make the turn on the way in. There is a pool but it didn't open this year. Even if it was open there is a per person fee. There are several beach access points and dogs are allowed year round. Being a state park, alcohol is not allowed to be consumed in public. This includes outside of your RV in your own site. I got the impression that this is more of a don't make us ask sort of a thing. We had some beer and wine outside with no issue. Just put it in glass that isn't obvious and don't act stupid. All in all we had a great experience. This was our first state park stay and we already booked to come back in a better site.

For Chippokes Plantation State Park: What Reserve America fails to tell you is the difference between site-specific and non site-specific sites. Site-specific sites are level with asphalt pads. Non site-specific are not level and dirt. The worst of it is that the price is the same for both.

For Chippokes Plantation State Park: We were looking to spend the Thanksgiving holiday camping in the Colonial Historical area around Williamsburg. We took a chance on Chippokes because it is across the river from the historical peninsula and would normally necessitate a long drive up to Richmond and then back down to the historical sites. Enter the phenomenal Scotland/Jamestown Ferry !! This state run ferry runs 24/7/365 and is completely free !! It is located 15m from Chippokes and drops off literally at the Jamestown Settlement Visitors Center as well as the Colonial Parkway which runs straight to the Williamsburg and Yorktown Visitors Centers. I was worried that it might take forever to ferry across the James River but the folks at VDOT kept all 6 of our trips to an hour or less. The kids loved the upper deck on the larger ferry and it made Chippokes the perfect alternative to the crowded campgrounds and roads near the historical areas. Traveling on the Colonial Parkway was not only quiet but beautiful as well. Chippokes itself couldn't be more enjoyable. It is a good sized park with a pool, Nature Center, hiking trails, park programs, etc. Sites on the 2 loops are mostly large and with only 60 or so total sites it is a very quiet campground. We camped in our popup at the end of the season so we had our pick of sites. We chose a very spacious site at the end of the A loop and had no neighbors until the last day. Some of the sites look like they may create a challenge to leveling but most were really spacious and private. Hookups were good. We had a 30a and 20a hookup which was nice. Firewood is available but a bit pricey although the proceeds help support the park so we were happy to pay a few extra $$. Bathrooms were very clean and stocked. Showers are separate rooms with tons of space and loads of hot water. We walked over to the B loop and the spaces were pretty much the same with the addition of several very large pull-throughs for bigger rigs. What started out as a role of the dice turned out to be a new family favorite for our family.

For Chippokes Plantation State Park: Campsites are $40 and $44 per night. Higher than advertised. Sites are uneven on gravel. The roads into the park are full of potholes. Certainly not worth $ 40 per night.

For Chippokes Plantation State Park: We camped in Loop B which had reasonably flat paved spots, with nice crushed stone picnic areas with tables and fire pits. Decent separation from other spots, with trees and woods. Very nice facilities all around, pleasant hosts, ice and firewood available. Big community pool. Easy biking and hiking trails. Would definitely stay here again if in the area.
