For Pilot Knob Long Term Visitor Area: I have been here three and a half months now. There are numerous places to camp. I chose a spot as far south, away from I-8 and the RR tracks as I could get. There is a low fence designating the perimeter of the LTVA. I love the hiking opportunities here. There is Pilot Knob with numerous trails and great views if you choose to go up on it. I mostly enjoy hiking the deep arroyos that spread out to the south of the Knob. The desert area to the west of the Knob is good level hiking if your not in to the steeper areas. This area is littered with the discarded items of, I assume, undocumented border crossers. This includes all manner of clothing, ripped up from the barbed wire I assume, as well as backpacks, personal items, shoes, hats, the ubiquitous empty water bottle, and old inner tubes which were probably used as flotation in order to cross the All American Canal that is right near the “big beautiful†wall. Yes, very close to the border and the only downside here for me is the fact that they burn trash on a regular basis just over the border in Mexico. I estimate it is just under two miles from me. When the wind is from the south, you get the smell. Water and dump at the gas station nearby and about 7 miles to Yuma.
