Features > Best Of > The 10 Most Romantic Hotels in the World
The marketing team that came up with the slogan “Virginia is for Lovers” was filled with geniuses. It evokes romantic images of horseback riding on the beach at sunset and candlelit dinners with your special someone. The problem is that I can't think of one place in Virginia I'd really want to stay with my lover. Nothing personal against Virginia, but when I think of a enchanting, whimsical getaway, Virginia isn't on the top of my list.
These hotels are:
1. The Oberoi Amarvillas (Agra, India)
This hotel overlooks the Taj Mahal, and what's more romantic than that? Admittedly, the Taj Mahal is a glorified tomb, but it was commissioned by a heart sick king in the 1600s, due to the death of his wife. This hotel is so spectacular, though, that it rivals the Taj. It consistently wins awards for service and amenities. Due to the recent tragedy in Mumbai, security is super tight here. Rates start from US$480 .
2. Banyan Tree Phucket (Thailand)
Pronounced “Poo Ket,” this island is one of the most glorious places you'll ever lay your eyes on. A friend of mine took his girlfriend here, and they got engaged the next week. I can't help but believe this island had some influence. White sand beaches and nearby diving reefs make this one a fantasy. Rates start from US$250. (What a steal!)
3. Las Ventanas al Paraiso (Mexico)
This name is Spanish for “Windows of Paradise,” and it is located on the tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. The rooms have no windows, because they are open to the outside, although it's extremely private. Each room has a telescope, because star gazing is a popular pastime at this resort. This is a favorite location for many celebrities. Rates start from US$595.
4. Breezes Beach Club & Spa (Zanzibar, Tanzania)
Breezes is a family-owned and managed hotel on the tiny island of Zanzibar, off the East African country of Tanzania. It was built in 1992. All rooms feature air conditioning. (It's hot in Africa!) Rates start from US$178. (Great price!)
5. The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok (Thailand)
This is the second hotel on this list that's located in Thailand, but it's so much different. It's located in the heart of Bangkok, and is one of the most influential hotels in the world. Created in 1876, it is continuously synonymous with perfection. Rates start from US$389.
6. Alvear Palace (Argentina)
Whenever I think about this hotel, I'm tempted to belt out a line from Evita … Don't cry for me, Argentina! Going to the Alvear Palace is like being transported to Eva Peron's Argentina. To get closer to your lover, learn the authentic Tango from a real Argentine dance teacher. Rates start from US$610.
7. Little Palm Island (Florida)
I love this place! It's located on Little Torch Key, and you need a boat or seaplane to get to the island. No kids allowed, only for ages 16 and up. Well, okay, older kids, but definitely no worrying about a baby crying in the next room. It features king-sized beds, private outdoor showers, and swaying hammocks. The best part about this hotel is you don't need a passport, because it's here in the US. How great is that? Rates start from US$765.
8. Il San Pietro Di Positano (Italy)
Located in the Bay of Positano amid an array of scented gardens, this hotel is gorgeous. You can almost hear the Italian music while looking through the photos. Il San Pietro overlooks the Mediterranean and the Laltari Mountains. Rates start from US$584.
9. The Little Nell (Colorado)
This gem is a favorite among celebrities who vacation in Aspen. It has 92 rooms and is nestled in the Rocky Mountains. These guys are pros at making your dreams a reality, and they definitely should know how, judging by the room rate. Rates start from US$935.
10. Ocean Blue Hotel (Bali, Indonesia)
The Ocean Blue is a collection of 141 private villas, and is located in the Nusa Dua enclave. It offers 24 hour room service, but the best feature of this hotel is its little chapel of love. So precious! A great place to elope, and the hotel offers information about Indonesian marriage laws on its site. Rates start from US$360.
